Yes. All Georgia motorcycle riders must wear an approved helmet. They must also have eye protection if the motorcycle does not have a windshield.
Georgia’s Helmet Requirements for Motorcyclists
Georgia requires all motorcyclists to wear helmets. Georgia only awards a Motorcycle License to riders 17 years old and up. So, those teens and all adults must protect their heads with a helmet.
- (a) No person shall operate or ride upon a motorcycle unless he or she is wearing protective headgear which complies with standards established by the commissioner of public safety.
Riders can check the Georgia DDS Motorcycle Operators Manual, 2023-2024 for guidance on finding a helmet that meets the state’s requirements. Full-face helmets, three-quarter helmets, and half-helmets are the usual options.
A full-face helmet with a face shield will also cover the state’s requirement for eye protection. A rider with a three-quarter helmet would have to purchase a qualifying snap-on face shield or wear goggles. A rider choosing a half-helmet would have to wear goggles as well.
Georgia requires helmets because of the undeniable role they play in helping many riders survive accidents and avoid severe injuries. The CDC reports that in 2019, helmets saved the lives of an estimated 1,872 motorcyclists. In one instance, Louisiana reinstated a universal motorcycle helmet law and immediately found that fatal accidents were 30% less likely.
